Indonesian Rendang Curry Starter
This one-step curry starter captures the bold flavor and enticing aroma of traditional Indonesian rendang, a rich, mildly spicy dry curry often cooked with beef or lamb. Its distinct, complex flavor comes from a unique blend of warm spices and savory aromatics, including coriander, cumin, ginger, garlic, and onion.
Add 8 ounces of cubed beef or chicken to a saucepan and toss with 1/4 cup Indonesian Rendang Curry Starter. Set aside for 5 minutes, then add 1 cup of water to the pan and simmer until the meat is tender. Add water if necessary to prevent burning, but cook until the liquid is completely absorbed and the meat is left to fry in the remaining fat for 2 to 3 minutes.

Popular throughout Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, rendang is a richly spiced, slow-cooked curry dish. Its enticing flavor and aroma comes from a complex mixture of spices, including coriander, cumin, ginger, and turmeric. Aromatics like garlic and onion add savory flavor, while lemongrass and ginger add brightness. Rendang, which is considered to be a “dry curry,” is cooked slowly until most of the sauce’s liquid has evaporated and the meat is very tender, resulting in a dark, thick, caramelized paste that coats the meat. This cooking technique, along with the dish’s heavy use of spice, was an important way to preserve meat in the tropical Indonesian climate before refrigeration became available. As a result, rendang remains a popular dish in the region’s cuisine. Most often cooked with beef or lamb as the main protein component and served with rice, rendang is traditionally served at special occasions and to honor guests.
As a dry blend of all-natural ingredients, our Indonesian Rendang Curry Starter is a shelf-stable alternative to jarred and canned curry sauces, which usually contain preservatives and artificial additives. This cost-efficient, clean-label curry starter saves time in the kitchen by eliminating the need to add extra ingredients like coconut milk, and also allows for more control over both the heat level and the consistency of the curry, based on the amount of liquid used. Simply add water and simmer to create a richly flavored, authentic rendang curry sauce.
The traditional rending can be made with chicken, vegetables, or like ours tender cuts of beef. The ingredients common to the rending are present in our Indonesian Rendang Curry Starter including coconut milk. The coconut is essential to finish the dish with fat for frying. True rending is not a saucy dish so keep cooking until the main ingredient is thickly coated with spices.
